What Is Green or Sustainable Architecture and Why Is It the Future?

Pollution and release of non-biodegradable substances are some of the major environmental issues that we have today. The construction of a property might seem harmless environmentally. However, most people have no idea that a huge amount of energy, materials, and resources are expended in the process. Now, the construction of properties cannot stop because it would bring the development process to a screeching halt. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a much more sustainable system of architecture.

What is Sustainable Architecture?
Sustainable architecture is a green system of constructing buildings which take the wellness of the ecosystem into consideration in order to reduce the detrimental effects the construction process might have on the environment. This approach makes thoughtful use of materials, energy as well as resources to build properties that do not harm the overall environment. This idea comes from the concept of “sustainability”, which aims to conserve resources, with the view that they remain available for future generations.

What Materials are Used in Sustainable Architecture?
Adarsh Wisteria
Non-sustainable architecture does not refrain from using toxic materials or producing new materials unnecessarily without consideration for the energy wastage. The materials used in constructing a sustainable building are different and much more efficient.

Volatile Organic Compounds
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) do not contain any toxic materials, like formaldehyde or carcinogenic substances. Instead of using materials that can harm the environment in the long run, sustainable buildings are built from compounds that are not harmful to the ecosystem like cellulose insulation and recycled denim.

Recycled Material
Sustainable architecture is good for the environment because of its use of second-hand materials which works wonders in reducing the energy that is produced while manufacturing the materials used for construction. In this way, a lot of energy is conserved in the construction process. For example, copper or even lumber can be recycled and reused in new buildings to build properties that are much less harmful to the ecosystem. Also, wood, bamboo, cork oak, straw, etc. can be recycled and reused in sustainable buildings.

Sustainability of Material
The sustainability of the materials decides the longevity and quality of the building. There have been a number of incompetent standards and certifications of sustainable building materials in place. However, they are being consistently refined, which will help only the most sustainable materials to be used for construction. Standards and certifications are very important to create robust buildings that do not harm the environment.

What does a Sustainable Building Look Like?
No two sustainable buildings look alike if they are not constructed in the same way. The look of a sustainable building is decided by the chosen sustainability measures, materials, and practices. Hanging gardens in One Central Park, Sydney is a sustainable building that tries to keep nature close.

On the other hand, in Germany, Freiburg-Vauban is the neighbourhood of houses with solar panels for roofs, which is called energy-plus housing. In every way, sustainable architecture is the future because of the emphasis it gives to eco-friendly practices.
